Melon Sandbox

A 2D ragdoll physics sandbox with no objectives. Spawn characters, pick up props, and watch what the simulation does with them.

What is Melon Sandbox?

Melon Sandbox is a two-dimensional physics toy with no score, no timer, and no level to finish. You get a flat arena, a menu of objects, and a ragdoll whose joints bend in whatever direction the simulation decides. Everything after that is up to you.

The appeal is the same one that made falling-sand toys and construction sandboxes last for decades: the world obeys rules you can learn, and then it surprises you anyway. Stack three crates and they hold. Stack thirty and the bottom row buckles, the tower leans, and a watermelon rolls off the top into a pile of oil drums.

How to play Melon Sandbox

  1. Open the page and press Run experiment; the sandbox loads into the frame above and there is no setup step.
  2. Select a prop from the left-hand menu. Characters, crates, barrels, vehicles, and weapons are grouped into categories you can scroll through.
  3. Click anywhere in the arena to spawn the selected prop at that position. Clicking repeatedly spawns multiple copies.
  4. Grab any object with the cursor and drag it. Ragdolls dangle from the joint you picked up, which is how most of the interesting accidents start.
  5. Use the toolbar above the arena to pause the simulation, clear everything, or undo your last action.
  6. Save a scene you like before destroying it, so you can return to the setup instead of rebuilding it from memory.

Controls

InputAction
Left clickSpawn the selected prop, or grab and drag an existing object.
Right click / long pressRemove the object under the cursor.
Scroll listBrowse the prop categories on the left-hand menu.
ToolbarPause, clear, or undo. Pausing is the easiest way to reposition a ragdoll without it collapsing.
TouchTap to spawn, drag with one finger to move an object, two fingers to pan the view.
FullscreenUse the button in the frame corner for a larger arena on desktop.

Melon Sandbox features

  • A full ragdoll skeleton per character, so limbs bend, fold, and pin under weight instead of behaving like rigid sprites.
  • Dozens of props across several categories, from furniture and food to vehicles and explosives.
  • Persistent objects: nothing despawns on its own, so a large scene keeps running until you clear it.
  • Scene save and load, which turns a one-off experiment into something you can revisit.
  • No objectives, no fail state, and no in-game timer pushing you forward.

Tips and strategy

  • Pause before you arrange. Objects dropped into a live scene start moving immediately, which makes careful placement almost impossible.
  • Build from the bottom up. A wide base of crates or planks will hold far more than a narrow tower of the same objects.
  • Put the fragile things at the top. Watermelons and glass break on impact, so they are wasted as structural material.
  • Explosives are better as a finishing move than a starting one. Clear the arena first, then detonate it to see the whole scene react at once.
  • If the frame feels slow, clear the arena. Performance drops as the object count climbs, and every prop stays live.

More about this sandbox

Melon Sandbox is a physics playground, meaning the whole experience is built around simulating momentum rather than challenging you with levels. You place objects and the engine decides what happens next: things fall, tip, bounce, break, burn, and knock each other over in ways that are consistent but rarely predictable.

Because nothing is scored, the game rewards curiosity rather than skill. A session might be a ten-second experiment where you drop a watermelon on a barrel, or twenty minutes spent constructing a bridge and then driving a vehicle across it until the middle gives way.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about playing Melon Sandbox in a browser.

Is Melon Sandbox free to play?

Yes. Melon Sandbox is free to play in the browser with no account, no payment, and no download. The page loads the game directly when you press play.

Can I play Melon Sandbox on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The game supports touch input as well as a mouse, so you can place, drag, and delete objects with a finger. On a small screen it is worth rotating the device to landscape for a wider working area.

Do I need to download or install Melon Sandbox?

No. It is an HTML5 game that runs inside the page. There is nothing to install and no app store involved.

What are the controls in Melon Sandbox?

Drag props from the menu with the left mouse button, grab and fling ragdolls, and use the kill switch to reset the scene. The full control list is in the Controls section above.

Is there a goal or a score in Melon Sandbox?

No. Like most sandbox games, it has no levels and no score. You set up a scene and observe the result, then change something and try again.

What can I do if the game feels slow?

Performance is tied to how much is happening at once. Clearing the scene and starting smaller usually fixes it, and closing other browser tabs helps on lower-end machines.

Where does this game come from?

Melon Sandbox is embedded from the publisher's own distribution source, and the underlying game remains the property of its rights holder. The written guide on this page is ours.
